What is Grade 430 Stainless Steel

Grade 430 stainless steel belongs to the ferritic stainless steel grades and is typically magnetic. It is only available as thin gauge sheet only as it does not have good welding properties hence there is no demand for thicker plate. Available gauges range from 0.5mm up to 2mm with a BA finish (mirror) or No4 finish which is brushed.

Chemical Composition

430 is a low carbon plain chromium grade stainless steel with around 17% chromium content, while nickel content is 0.5% max. Its other constituents are present in trace amounts. There is a maximum 1% each of manganese and silicon, 0.12% carbon, and 0.03% and 0.04% respectively for sulphur and phosphorous.

Corrosion Resistance

430 has good resistance to a wide variety of corrosive environments including nitric acid and some organic acids. 430 stainless steel is commonly used where corrosion resistance is required, however, it is not suitable for highly corrosive environments such as in marine applications.

Typical Applications

Typical applications for grade 430 would be in the kitchen – for sinks and appliances & HVACS. Together with other ferritic grades such as Grades 409 & 431 it is specified in the automotive industry. This grade tends to be more cost effective than Grade 304 due to its low nickel content though it is not as versatile or widely available in a range of products like 304.
