1. Bleach
Bleach is a great product for sterilising but unfortunately not for stainless steel, especially if it is left stagnant for a period of time. As bleach contains ingredients that serve as oxidants, materials such as stainless steel can become corroded when exposed to sodium hypochlorite (bleach).
2. Metallic Scourers
Metallic scourers will scratch and damage the passive layer on stainless steel and therefore leads to corrosion. It can also contaminate your stainless steel with carbon steel also encouraging staining. One should rather use fine synthetic scourers/sponges such as a Scotchbrite®.
3. Silver or Brass Cleaners
Contrary to popular belief silver/brass cleaners should not be used on stainless steel. They contain abrasives which can again scratch the passive layer of the stainless steel and cause corrosion over a period of time. One should rather avoid using these products especially on high end appliances.
The Best Way to Clean Stainless Steel
The best method for cleaning Stainless Steel is quite simply soap, or a mild detergent (such as SUNLIGHT LIQUID®) in warm water, applied with a soft cloth such as a microfibre or synthetic sponge. Rinse in hot water and dry with a soft cloth or allow to ‘drip’ dry.
