Selecting Stainless Steel Grades: 3 Key Environmental Factors
Stainless steel is known for its corrosion resistance due its chromium content. The more chromium a grade has, generally the better its corrosion resistance is. Other elements also play a factor – such as nickel and molybdenum to name a few. Corrosion in this article refers to any microscopic degradation or discolouration of the parent material and in stainless steel this is usually recorded in microns per year.
The corrosion resistance of stainless steel is on a general basis several hundred fold better that other commonly used corrosive resistant materials such as galvanised steel or aluminium.
What Environmental Factors To Consider When Selecting Stainless Steel Grades

1. Distance From The Sea
Stainless steel is affected by chlorides such as of sodium (salt) – which as we know the closer one is positioned to the sea the higher the salt content in the air. Grade selection is then important as the wrong grade will contaminate and require more regular cleaning and maintenance as faster pitting corrosion occurs.
2. Pollution
Industrial and Urban areas tend to have more pollution in the atmosphere and may contain airborne particles including chlorides, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids which will deposit onto the stainless steel and cause corrosion. In industrial areas carbon contaminants are also likely to be in the atmosphere from factories in the neighbourhood which again will cause corrosion.
3. Precipitation
Stainless steel needs to be kept clean and free of contaminants to keep the passive layer of chromium oxide intact so rainfall is another factor to consider. Regular rainfall will naturally wash away contaminants so if one’s environment tends to have less rainfall, then more regular cleaning and maintenance needs to be carried out. Rain water however can also be a hazard as if it does not run off the surface and collects in crevices and pockets. This stagnant contaminated water can in fact cause corrosion.
