3CR12 – A Proudly South African Product

As previously published, Stainless Steel is a family of steels containing a minimum of 11% chromium. This chromium together with oxygen forms the protective passive layer. Stainless steel is classified into different groups – Ferritic, Austenitic, Martensitic, Duplex and Precipitation Hardening. Ferritic Stainless Steels are plain chromium alloys with low carbon levels and are included in the AISI series. These steels have moderate to excellent corrosion resistance depending on the chromium content and are magnetic. They cannot be further strengthened or hardened and with the exception of 3CR12 have poor weldability. Well-known grades falling under this “branch” are 430, 409 and 3CR12 to name a few.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

In this blog we discuss 3CR12 – a proudly South African product developed by Columbus Stainless Steel. Visit our blog for more informative discussions on stainless steel and what we do.

3CR12

Columbus Stainless based in Middelburg South Africa developed 3CR12 in the 1970’s. It is now recognised as the world’s most specified 12% chromium utility stainless steel. It is price competitive, corrosion resistant, weldable, utility chromium steel with particular advantages in wet abrasive applications. Unlike other ferritic grades, it can be welded in thicknesses of up to 30mm. 3CR12 meets the European standard 1.4003, included in spec EN 10088. It also conforms to ASTM A240-UNS-S41003. In terms of atmospheric corrosion resistance, the utility ferritics are superior to mild steel, weathering steel, copper and aluminium. When exposed to aggressive atmospheric conditions, staining may occur, but this does not affect the lifetime performance. However, if aesthetic appearance is important, it is recommended that the utility ferritics are painted or alternatively a nickel grade of stainless steel is used. The utility ferritics have also found widespread use in wet sliding abrasion conditions and in aqueous environments involving exposure and/or immersion with the exception of untreated stagnant water and oxygen deficient environments.

Applications for 3CR12

The common applications include materials handling (bulk handling, coal, sugar, agriculture, abattoirs), road transport (passenger vehicles, coaches and buses, trucks, freight and utility vehicles), rail transport (freight, passenger rail, light rail, rail infrastructure), petrochemicals and chemical, power generation, telecommunication cabinets and electrical enclosures and water and sewage treatment.
