Stainless steel is a powerful material that can be recycled infinite times. Not only does this make it a sustainable option for many industries, but it’s also incredibly durable and to be trusted even in pressure-sensitive applications. Not all steel, however, is made equal. We here at Euro Steel specialize in many stainless steel pipes, and to help differentiate the various steel piping, we’ve compiled this guide:
Types of Stainless Steel Pipes
We know all about stainless steel, and have crafted a series of helpful articles and guides on our blog to help you understand the many classifications, types, and uses of stainless steel. Steel piping, for example, requires specific types of stainless steel based on the intended use.
Standard Stainless Steel Pipes
Standard stainless steel is perfect for regular environments like homes and buildings. SS304 and SS316 are popular grades for decorative purposes due to their excellent resistance to weather, chemicals, and corrosion.

High-Temperature Alternative
In industries with high temperatures, SS316L steels are preferred due to their improved heat resistance. For even more durable and corrosion-resistant variants, you’ll need ASTM A312 SS304 or SS304L steels instead. This specification is for seamless and welded austenitic pipes designed to tackle high temperatures and work even in corrosive environments.
Sanitary Tubing
Sanitary steel piping or tubing is used in food processing industries that require high hygiene standards. Generally made of ASTMA270, this tubing is highly corrosion-resistant and requires minimal maintenance.
Aircraft Stainless Steel Tubing
Heat and corrosion-resistant nickel and chromium stainless steel is used for all aircraft applications. For welded tubes and parts, stainless steel with low carbon is preferred. In contrast, for seamless and welded tubing, aircraft structural material manufactured as per Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS) or Military Specifications (MIL Specs) is used.
Pressure Stainless Steel Pipes
Pressure stainless pipes are designed to endure high pressure and temperature. They are made from an austenitic and ferritic variety of steel, which offers extra resistance to pipes. Different types of pressure pipes available in this variety include electric fusion-welded pipes, welded pipes with large diameters for high-temperature and corrosive applications, and corrosion-resistant stainless steel pipes and tubes.
Mechanical Tubing
Stainless steel mechanical tubing is used in applications like bearings and cylinders. Grades ASTMA511 and A554 are commonly used for mechanical tubing and are available in different shapes like round, rectangular, and square.
