  • MUCH TO CONSIDER
The Competition Tribunal began hearings on last week into the alleged excessive pricing of propylene and polypropylene by Sasol Chemical Industries (SCI) between 2004 and the end of 2007, with Advocate Arnold Subel outlining the commission’s case and Advocate Wim Trengove leading SCI’s defence. Pictured above are just some of the files that have been prepared by the legal teams for the long-running case. The matter was was referred to the tribunal in 2010 following a probe by the commission, which began in 2007. The hearings, which are under way in Pretoria, are due to run for most of May.
  • Talent Management
The 2013 departmental Budget-Vote cycle has more or less come and gone, with South Africa’s Cabinet Ministers having outlined their various programmes and spending priorities for the current fiscal year. There were a number of highlights. From Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba’s assertion that 50% of all Eskom’s coal should be supplied by emerging black coal miners from 2018, to Energy Minister Dipuo Peters’ statement that a new nuclear programme had the potential of ‘leapfrogging’ South Africa into a knowledge economy.
  • New growth ‘bargain’
A leading International Monetary Fund (IMF) official last week urged South Africa’s social partners of government, labour and business to pursue a “broad national bargain” to overcome the prevailing structural impediments to higher growth and employment. Speaking in Pretoria at an event hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs, first deputy MD David Lipton said that, while there were external factors both supporting and constraining growth in the economy, South Africa needed to “do more on its own” to overcome a number of “home-grown” limits to faster economic expansion.
