“Along with peace, partnership is one of our most powerful weapons in this renewal. What gives me great joy is the knowledge that throughout our country, people from every background and community, from every party and walk of life, are increasingly joining hands in recognition of the fact that we are one nation with one destiny.”

Nelson Mandela  - March 1999

Imagine if the high hopes Madiba expressed for Africa that day come true……. if just one small part of what he has sought to achieve is translated into reality. Imagine if we live up to just one fraction of the standards he has set for himself, then Africa….and the World, will be a far, far better.

Imagine

Imagine people motivated by the significant difference they personally make Aware that their combined efforts do inspire, create opportunities and set standards, not only in our industry but in our community, our country and our continent.

Imagine people who appreciate and enjoy the benefits of being part of a cooperative group. Exchanging their views, bringing fresh insights and developing strong relationships.

Imagine people in a place that celebrates diversity, a place that encourages and facilitates creativity, where people are encouraged to use initiative and question everything, a place where people are not managed by force or fear, where people understand and embrace the culture of discipline required to be ‘world class.’

Imagine partnering with people, creating exceptional value, causing tremendous leaps in empowerment, performance and effectiveness, an essential part of something internationally recognized as the solutions provider for specialized metals.

Just imagine……………….Euro Steel

  • ‘The fierce urgency of now’
What can government do to improve the outlook for growth and job creation in light of some serious external and domestic economic headwinds? Standard Bank’s chief economist Goolam Ballim has provided one quite helpful answer to this question: raise public sector investment to levels where South Africa can once again sustain a minimum yearly investment rate of 25% of gross domestic product (GDP), which will, in turn, help raise overall growth levels.
  • New rules
It is interesting to note that Consulting Engineers South Africa (Cesa) has made an application to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for engineering consulting services to be given ‘designated’ status under government’s preferential procurement rules. Under newly introduced regulations, the DTI has the authority to stipulate that government departments, agencies and SoCs procure designated products and services from local manufacturers, or providers.
  • Good news, but . . .
Amid the prevailing economic gloom and doom, it came as welcome relief to learn that South Africa’s foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows rose 269% in 2011 – climbing to $4.5-billion last year from a revised 2010 figure of $1.2-billion. The South African recovery was underpinned by the contested $2.4-billion purchase of a majority interest in JSE-listed Massmart by retail giant Wal-Mart, of the US.
